Ready to change or renovate the look of a room in your home? But with rising prices and back-to-school costs, you might be hesitating. Not to worry! There are plenty of things you can do to give that room a refresh on the cheap without fully renovating (or spending a ton of cash). If you haven’t seen it, check out our first post on changing the look of a room without spending a lot of money.
But first, here are a few steps to take before you begin:
-First things first: Set a budget and stick to it. This will give you a good idea of how much you can purchase, change, and hire out (if needed) as you begin to price things out and see what the costs are.
-Second, think about what you want to change: What has you wanting to change your room? Does the traffic flow pattern not work for your family anymore? Is the furniture or flooring looking a little tired? Are you dealing with a lot of clutter? Once you identify the problem, figuring out what you need to change will be a lot simpler and help keep you on budget.
-Third: Jot down some ideas and begin pricing things out. Have a creative brainstorming session, browse the web, and price out your ideas. Narrow them down and you’ll know exactly where to start.
Need some inspiration? Here are a few ideas to try:
-Change your room around: This is the simplest (and cheapest) way to refresh the look of a room! By moving your furniture and accents to different spots in the room, you’ll create new focal points and traffic flow patterns.
-Change your lighting: Lamps can have a big impact on the look of a room, whether it’s a table lamp or a standing one. Maybe you can trade lamps from one room in the house to another for a quick (and free) update! Light fixtures can also make a big difference if new ones are in your budget. You can also add wooden beams to the ceiling, create a decorative ceiling, or try some crown moulding.
-Change up the walls: If you don’t want to paint the whole room (or even if you do), try creating an accent wall with paint, mirrors, pictures, paneling, or wallpaper. Even small changes to your decor can have a big impact. Another idea is to give your fireplace a refresh–paint the walls around it, add shelving above it, or hang a picture. Change out your decor on the mantel to create a different focal point.
-Repurpose your furniture: Is that old armchair looking tired? Does that armoire that’s been sitting in the basement need a new coat of paint? Put them to good use! You can grab some new cushions or pillows for that armchair, or even re-cover the cushions if you’re crafty or know someone that can sew. Sanding down a dresser, armoire, or other piece of wooden furniture and restaining or repainting it can change the look of the piece entirely. Maybe you can use that old writing desk to create a new vanity once you paint it a different color. The sky’s the limit!
-Reduce the clutter: Is the reason you can’t stand your room anymore because it’s full of clutter? (check out our other posts on storage here and here) There’s no way around it: sort the items into piles of things you use regularly and want to keep out, those items that need to be stored, and the ones you want to get rid of. Once you’ve figured out what type of storage you need (baskets for kids’ toys, bookshelves, or storage bins) and where you want to store them, you’re already halfway toward reducing the clutter! As you remove the clutter from your room, you’ll be able to see whether you’re satisfied with it the way it is, or whether you want to make additional changes.
