How Can I Keep My Attic in Top Shape?

Is your attic out of sight, out of mind? Maybe it’s just a storage space you visit once a year when you bring the Christmas decorations down. But if something goes wrong with your attic, it could lead to bigger problems in the rest of your house, including energy inefficiency, rodents, and mold–to name a few. So, how do you keep your attic in top shape? Read on for our top tips for a well-maintained attic!

-Inspect your attic regularly: First off, take a look around your attic at least once a quarter. This way, you’ll be able to spot and stop anything that looks like it could become a problem before it starts. Make sure your attic is dry and well-ventilated. Check for leaks and any other forms of moisture. Check your vents to make sure nothing is blocking them.

-Check for pests: Look for signs of droppings or nests, and take steps to control them if you do spot something. Seal any cracks and openings that you find to prevent pests from entering.

-Check your insulation: Is everything in good order? Are there any drafty areas? Make sure there’s been no damage and that all the areas in your attic that need to be insulated are. Additionally, don’t store items directly on your insulation to prevent compressing it. Make good use of shelving units to store your items.

-Clean it out: Has it been a while since you’ve been in your attic? Take some time to sweep or vacuum up all the dust, and wipe down any shelves, furniture, and windows. This will help your home’s overall air quality.

-Check the structural components: Are the stairs to your attic in good working order? Do the floorboards creak, or are there some beams that look like they might be rotting? If you think you may have some structural issues, finding them early can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.

Keeping your attic well maintained isn’t difficult, but it does take some time. If you spot anything in your attic that looks like it needs some repair, give Hunter Handyman Services a call at (815) 780-7884 for more information and a free estimate.
