Where Should I Look for Wind Damage in My Home?

A three-story home in the fall

There’s no doubt about it–the Illinois Valley has had some windy weather lately! You probably already know that high winds can damage your home, but do you know where to look and what to look for? Check out our top spots to scope out any wind damage your home may have incurred.

Outside, here’s what to look for:

-Check your roof: This is the most obvious step in checking for wind damage. Are there any discolored or missing shingles? Is your roofline warped?

-Check your gutters, soffit, flashing, fascia: Not only should you make sure your gutters aren’t clogged, but also check for any bent or damaged pieces. The same goes for soffit, flashing, and fascia. Not sure what to look for? Check out our article on it here.

-Check your chimney: Does the flashing around your chimney look intact? Is it missing any mortar or standing a little crooked?

-Check your siding: Walk around your house and check your siding for any dents, cracks, or missing sections that the wind may have taken.

-Check your yard: Are there tree limbs, shingles, or pieces of siding in your yard? If you have debris that has blown into your yard that you need help clearing, Hunter Handyman Services is happy to help.

Inside, check for these problems:

-Check for leaks: If there’s been any damage to your roof, gutters, or flashing, there is the potential for water leaks.

-Check your windows and doors: Wind can certainly damage windows and doors, so if anything feels extra drafty or there are visible cracks or other damage, Hunter Handyman Services can help with that. Check out our article on drafty windows and doors here.

-Check your drywall: Are there any cracks? Is there any water damage?
