Signs of a Well-Maintained Home

You found your dream home—it’s everything you’ve been looking for, and you’re excited to put in an offer. But wait! What if the home has some issues lurking underneath the surface? What are some small signs that a homeowner has taken pride in their home, and things have been well maintained? Paying attention to the little details can go a long way toward letting you know how well the homeowner has taken care of your potential new home.

-Clean windows: Cleaning the windows is not a chore that anyone loves, so it’s safe to say that if the windows are spotless, the homeowner has put that same amount of TLC into the rest of the home, since windows require regular cleaning and upkeep.

-Clean gutters: Gutters are important, since they help prevent water damage, but clogged gutters can cause a lot of problems. If the current homeowner has taken care of the gutters and they are clean and in good condition, it’s likely that they’ve taken good care of the rest of the home.

-Neat landscaping: Mowed lawn and neat, tidy landscaping indicate that the owners care enough about their home to invest time and money into their yard, which is another area of the home that takes regular care and maintenance. Are the trees diseased, dead, or do they look healthy? What about other plants? What the yard looks like can be a good indication of how much they value their property.

-Paint: Is there a fresh coat of paint on the walls, or are you seeing some paint that’s chipped or faded? Whether inside or out, fresh paint shows that the homeowners care about where they live, and it’ll be easy for you to do the same thing.

-Clean entryways: Just like with a well-tended lawn, a clean, tidy entryway says a great deal about the home’s owners. Do they care enough to create a welcoming environment for themselves and their guests, or does it need some work?

-Organization: If the storage areas (closets, pantries, etc.) are well organized and free of clutter, you can be sure that the other areas of the home have been taken care of.

These are just a few of the subtle signs that you can look for as you prepare to find a new home (or use it as a checklist to prep for selling your home).
