You might be interested in integrating technology into your home to make life a little easier. Your lights can turn on and off automatically, a smart thermostat can adjust the temperature, and even your blinds can shut without you having to raise a finger (or pull a cord). But it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out where to start: What should I make “smart” in my home? What do I even need? How lazy do I want my future self to be?
From video doorbells to automated light switches, Hunter Handyman has got you covered when it comes to adding smart upgrades to your home. Here’s our list of a few easy smart home upgrades you may want to consider:
-Smart doorbell: There are plenty of smart doorbells on the market. If you don’t have one, these are really useful, especially if you’re away from home a lot. You can check through an app on your phone to see who’s at your door, and even talk to them (or use it as an excuse not to answer the door–but we didn’t tell you that!).
-Smart plugs: For all the times you forget to unplug everything, from chargers to printers and more–now you can switch off the power to that outlet to save a little money, right from the comfort of your couch. (They’re also great for holiday lights!) You can also use these to automate all of the “not smart” items in your home that you want on a routine (coffee maker, etc.).
-Smart switches and bulbs: Lighting that turns on when it senses you entering the room is convenient. Whether you often have your hands full, want to make it easier on the kiddos who can’t reach, or are making your home more accessible for all, smart switches are a great place to start. Depending on the type of smart bulbs you choose, you can program the lights on a daily schedule, and even set them to be dimmer during your normal sleep hours if it senses you get up to use the restroom.
-Smart locks: Tired of carrying around a key? Maybe a smart lock is for you! Smart locks can have key codes for entry, a smart phone app, fingerprint scan, or voice command. You can also use a plain old low-tech key, if you want.
-Smart curtains: You don’t have to manually open and close the curtains! You can install smart curtains and control them from an app on your phone, or automate it within your smart home setup.
