Your Guide to Basement Upgrades

Your basement doesn’t have to be just a dusty storage space. You can turn it into some extra square footage, whether you need a home office, guest bedroom, or want a comfortable game or TV room for the whole family. The ideas are endless once you start thinking about your family’s needs and what might fit within your budget. Read on for some recommendations on how to upgrade your basement.

-Home office: With so many remote or hybrid positions, lots of people need a home office, but may not have extra space upstairs. What about your basement? The good news with this is that you can get as fancy (or not) as you want. You can create a great office space whether you already have walls, want to build a room, or just set aside a dedicated work space downstairs. A desk, chair, and some great shelves can set you up for daily success. Add a rug and other decor to define the space in a budget-friendly way, and make sure you don’t skimp on good lighting.

-Craft room: Another great idea for a basement is to set up an area where you can get your creative juices flowing. Crafting can take a lot of supplies and space, and it may not be feasible to leave things like your sewing machine or scrapbooking supplies set up on your dining room table. Getting a great desk or extra counter space, lots of shelving, and good lighting away from everything else in the house can keep you inspired when you have to step away from a project temporarily without things getting shuffled and shoved away.

-Home theater: This is a classic basement upgrade for a reason. You may not have the wall space upstairs for that giant TV, but you can create the perfect home theater downstairs to showcase that new TV, sound system, and sectional.

-Entertainment space: This can be an extension of the home theater, or be a separate space entirely for your basement. Kitchens and wet bars are popular basement additions. Add a great countertop, and anything else you might want to make your bar feel like your own. Kitchen items such as a refrigerator, air fryer, or microwave are convenient for serving appetizers to go with your cocktails, but you may want to add a stove for full meals. Don’t forget to add comfy seating, cozy lights and decor, and get ready for a great party!

-Playroom: Need a space for the kids to run and play? Let them loose in the basement! Use furniture, rugs, and storage to create a dedicated space that feels fun and comfortable for them. Plenty of storage keeps toys under control, and even if they don’t always put everything away, at least you won’t be stepping on LEGOs anymore.

-Fitness space: Here’s another classic basement upgrade–the fitness space. It’s important to create a space that you want to exercise, or your equipment will wind up dusty and become a clothes rack. What can you do? Get bright lights, motivational posters, good flooring (depending on the types of workouts you want to do), a TV or sound system, and anything else you need besides your equipment to keep you coming back for a workout daily.

-Extra bedroom: Whether you need space for the kiddos or want a more private guest bedroom for when company comes to stay, you can create a comfy, cozy space no matter your budget. Adding a privacy screen if you don't have finished walls can create the illusion of a separate room, and decorating with a warm rug, extra blankets, and pillows make the space feel homey. Make sure light switches aren't too far away (or that you have lamps on nightstands) so guests don't have to stumble across the basement in the dark. And if you can add an extra bathroom (full or half), it not only makes things easier for guests, but also increases the value of your home.
