With most schools back in session, many families are settling in to find a new routine. Keeping kids’ backpacks, books, homework, chromebooks, and other items organized can be overwhelming–not to mention keeping track of chore charts, sports schedules, and music lessons!
Here are our top tips for keeping your family organized this school year:
-Create a routine: Once your kids get home from school, get everything unpacked so your kids know what they need to do and you know if there’s anything that needs parental attention (and you don’t find any rotten banana peels later!).
-Have a designated place for everything: Try to keep your kids’ book bags in the same place once they’re unpacked. Whether that’s in their rooms, or by hanging hooks in your mudroom or even in the garage, kids can be responsible for putting their items back in the same place every day.
-Create a homework space: If possible, continue developing the routine and have your kids do their homework in the same place every day. This can help them get into a mindset to study. Place pencil organizers with writing utensils and other supplies, chargers, and everything they might need at each homework station, so they can study uninterrupted. Make sure there is good lighting at their desks, too.
-Storage, storage, storage: Do you need a place for your kids to put their stuff over the weekend or even to separate subjects while they’re studying? Rolling carts with drawers work well for out-of-the-way storage, and even over-the-door hanging storage can provide a good option. Of course, bookshelves, floating shelves, and simple desktop organizers are all great solutions, depending on your family’s needs.
-Smooth scheduling: Are you struggling to keep the kids’ chores straight? Is your Google calendar cluttered with different colors for each person in your family, and you find you’re not updating it? Maybe it’s time for a big dry-erase calendar or chalkboard option! Having a space on the wall in your kitchen, living room, or other central area of your home dedicated to keeping track of your family’s schedule might be just what you need to plan your day at a glance. There are plenty of DIY options or dry erase calendars you can order. You can also go old-school and paint part of the wall with chalkboard paint to customize your calendar system. Plan the whole month at once and jot down practices, meetings, and lesson times, so everyone stays in the loop.
-Organized for activities: Whether your kids are in sports, band, or both, they have stuff. Create a nook for them where they can store all the equipment needed for their activities. Find a great storage system (bins, part of their closet, or another storage solution) for extra sports uniforms, athletic shoes, duffel bags, and other items. For musical kiddos, create a dedicated practice area for them and provide good storage options, whether that is with a desktop file organizer or three-ring binder to keep their sheet music organized to make practicing easier.
