Getting your deck and patio ready for spring

The calendar may say that spring began last Thursday, but the weather didn't get the message! While we’ve had sun, snow, rain, and high winds in the last seven days (what a wild ride!), you are probably dreaming of those days you can enjoy your deck or patio as the season officially begins. Once you can get outside, make sure your deck or patio is ready for entertaining. Here’s how to get your deck or patio ready for spring and keep it in top shape.

-Clear any debris: With the recent high winds, check your deck or patio for any debris. You’ll need to safely clear any debris out of the way before you can move on to the next step.

-Inspect your deck or patio for damage: Fluctuating temperatures and precipitation can wreak havoc on your deck! Check your deck for warped, cracked, or rotted boards, insect infestation, and raised nails. Like anything else in your home, the older your deck is, the more careful you’ll have to be about inspecting for damage. You'll want to take care of any problems now before you want to use your deck more frequently. Not sure what to look for? Hunter Handyman Services is happy to help make sure your deck is in top shape for the season. If you have a patio, make sure the pad is level and there aren’t any cracks.

-Cleaning and staining: Once you know your deck and patio are safe, it’s time to get cleaning! You’ll probably need to give your deck or patio a good sweep to remove smaller pieces of debris. Make sure to move any outdoor furniture or storage units you may keep on your deck year-round, both to inspect for damage and to clean. Once you’ve done that, depending on the size of your deck or patio, a power wash is a great next step. After you’ve washed your deck, it may be time to think about a new coat of stain or sealant. It’s recommended to give your deck a new coat of stain every 2-4 years, but the time frame could be more or less frequent if your deck is in constant sunlight, shade, or your weather takes a toll on the material.

-Put your furniture and decorations out when you’re ready, and enjoy your deck or patio!

You may also want to make changes to your deck if you’ve moved into a new house over the winter or your needs have changed. Now’s the time!
