Spring Cleanup: Indoors Edition
Last week, we tackled all those pesky outdoor chores and repairs so that you can get to enjoying your outdoor space sooner. This week, we’ll share our list for spring cleanup inside your home to refresh and renew your space.
-General decluttering: This is always a good place to start. Cleaning out clutter is the easiest and cheapest way to change the look of a room, because it’ll make your space look bigger. Don’t know where to start? Ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I need this? Make three piles: one to keep, one to donate, and one for the garbage if needed.
-Cleaning: You can’t escape spring cleanup without a good, thorough cleaning of your home. Wipe down walls, baseboards, doorframes, windowsills, and all those areas you often forget about. Dust, vacuum, mop, and use this as an opportunity to wash all of your bedding, curtains, rugs, and throw pillows. Wash your windows, light fixtures, and give those appliances a good deep clean, too. (When was the last time you moved your fridge to clean behind it?)
-Organize: Now that you’ve decluttered and cleaned, now’s a great time to reorganize everything. Do you need a different organizational system for your desk? Clean out and reorganize your closets and dresser drawers. Why not tackle those kitchen cabinets, too?
-Small repairs: Check your walls to see if you need some paint touch-ups or drywall repair. Are your windows and doors air-tight? Do your screen doors latch properly? Are there light bulbs that need to be changed, or a ceiling fan that needs some repair? Are your window screens free of damage? Don’t let those small things pile up any longer.
-HVAC maintenance: Check and change any air filters and inspect or clean your air ducts for buildup of mold, allergens, dust, and debris. Make sure your sump pump is in good working order as well for all those spring rains. Check around your basement and attic for any signs of moisture. Now’s a good time to inspect your detectors (smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors) and change the batteries, as well as checking other safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and flashlights for signs of corrosion or to change batteries.
