When should I hire a handyman?
“Can I do this myself, or should I hire a handyman?” We know it’s tempting to do the work yourself, especially if you have some knowledge of what the project entails. You may think you can get the work done faster than it would take for someone to come to your home (and maybe you can!), or think you’ll be able to save money if you don’t have to hire a handyman.
Before you jump on the DIY bandwagon, assess your skills and risk tolerance, and ask yourself a couple of questions:
-Do I know what needs to be done? Do you know how to complete the work from start to finish, or can you easily find the answer from a trusted online source or book? It’s important that you know how the project will be completed step-by-step from start to finish.
-Do I have everything I need? What equipment or tools does this project require? Don’t get halfway through the project before you realize you don’t have what you need and have to make an emergency trip to Home Depot or Menards. Plus, purchasing tools for one home repair project can get expensive, especially if you never use them again.
-Do I have a plan if something goes wrong? What if the repair is more in-depth than it seems? What if something doesn't get done quite right? Some mistakes lead to costly repairs in the long run. You don't want to be out $200 for what should have been a $50 project.
Now that you have a general guide for whether you should tackle that DIY project, here are some reasons to hire a handyman:
-Safety: There are safety risks involved with the project and it’s best to leave it to the professionals. Electrical work and home repair that deals with structural issues can have serious consequences if there’s an accident. If you’re not absolutely comfortable with tackling the project, hire someone who can do it for you.
-Money: There’s no room in the budget for mistakes. Remember when we mentioned that sometimes people think it’s cheaper to do a project themselves? Well, sometimes it’s actually cheaper to hire a handyman! You can be sure that the project will get done right the first time. Nothing will need to be redone, and you can rest assured that everything will be completed in a safe, quality manner.
-Time: If you’re putting your home up for sale, consider letting a handyman do the work for you. Don’t give potential buyers any reason to suspect that recent work was completed incorrectly—and quality work will help you make back the price of hiring the handyman.
-Peace: Hiring a handyman brings peace of mind. We care for your home as much as you do, and it matters to us that the work is done right. With Hunter Handyman Services, your home is in good hands.
