Adding Extra Storage to Your Home

A closet with an empty organizational unit

We know–clutter can get out of control easily! Maybe you’ve decluttered all you can and you’re looking to add some extra storage as fall sports and back-to-school activities start up again. Whatever the reason, we’ve got some great storage and organizational hacks for your home.

-Working from home without an office and tired of the mess on your dining room table? You can create a WFH space by rethinking the design of your closet! You can add a straight, heavy-duty shelf at desk height and redo your shelving to create more functional options for your workspace. The best part is that at the end of the day, you can close the closet doors, truly walk away from your work, and not have to look at the clutter when you’re off the clock.

-Overhead storage: When you’re out of wall or floor space, think up! Garages, especially, are great places to add overhead or ceiling storage for certain items that are more lightweight, such as ladders, seasonal decorations, and more. Adding a high shelf in your bedroom, linen, or coat closets can also create more space to put items you don’t use everyday. Add some wire shelves underneath joists in your basement or garage and use the space between joists for storage.

-Cabinet door storage: Another clever trick to add extra storage is to use a door-mounted storage rack. This is particularly good for underneath the kitchen sink to store things you need often, such as cleaner bottles, but could also be used for bathroom sink storage, pantry doors, and closets.

-Double-stack deep drawers: Do you have deep drawers and are forever trying to find things in a jumbled mess? Divide that drawer in half and double your storage space! You can insert a tray to create two shallow drawers; everything will stay in the same drawer, but you’ll be able to find everything you need.

-Open shelves: If you have a little extra wall space and want to add some storage, consider open shelving or try some visually interesting cube shelving in a pattern that works best for your wall to hold books, decor, and more.

-Couch shelf: Whether your couch sits by a wall or not, you can add a shelf behind it to hold items like books, remotes, a small lamp, or plants. Additionally, finding an ottoman that doubles as a storage bin is also a great idea. Storage benches are great, too, since they provide extra seating and reduce clutter.

-Got a weird corner where furniture won’t fit? Add some floating shelves! Maximize your whole floor plan as much as possible, and if there’s a spot where furniture doesn’t work, try a corner shelving unit or create some custom shelves. This also goes for the corners of your closets and that weird, narrow space between (or next to) your washer and dryer.

-Ankle-level storage: Banish the disorganization of baking pans and serving trays, and have some pull-out drawers installed underneath your existing kitchen cabinets.

-Kitchen storage rail: If you need to get utensils up off your countertops, consider running a storage railing the length of your kitchen counter to hang hooks for coffee mugs, serving spoons, oven mitts, and more.
